Community Health Workers offer health education and intervention counseling for a variety of health issues in the community. They perform outreach at local events and play a vital role in leading all of our health programs.

Health Fairs are held on the last Thursday of each month. CHWs and special guests provide education and hands-on training on a variety of health topics relevant to the South Asain community. Themes of past health fairs have included women's health, diabetes prevention and monitoring, and breast health.

Check the events page for news of upcoming health fairs.

Patient navigation is offered to community members experiencing difficulties accessing the health care they need. Navigators provide translation and accompany people to health appointments when requested.

Community health survey. This survey was conducted in Westchester and Parkchester during 2009-2010. A total of 167 women were interviewed in their homes on a variety of topics, including demographics, health issues, social service needs, and health behaviors. A summary of the findings from the survey will be available on our website in November 2010.

Breast Health Education is provided for groups in the Bronx and Queens. In collaboration with the CHWs, our curriculum specialist designed education materials to help teach South Asian men and women about the dangers and prevention of breast, colon, and cervical cancers. To date, the CHWs have used these materials to teach 25 breast health education classes, reaching close to 800 women in the process.

In addition to regular breast health education, in April 2012 WSP partnered with Project Renewal to host a Mammogram Van at our site! The event allowed women in the area to receive a service they might otherwise have trouble accessing.
